What is the history of the NBC News channel?
NBC News is the news channel of the American television network National Broadcasting Company NBC. It broadcast its signal for the first time on February 21, 1940. NBC News became the first newscast in the history of television in the United States and in June 1940 through its main station located in New York City, operating on channel 1, it broadcast thirty-four hours of the Republican National Convention live from Finland. In 1944 there were no live broadcasts of the conventions held because of World War II, due to restrictions, later some recordings would be shown.
In 1948 NBC News joined with life magazine to give nightly coverage of the election of President Harry S Truman, by then the television audience was small, but the participation of NBC News in New York was double that of any other. The following year NBC News would launch the successful news program Camel News Caravan with high ratings despite the technological limitation, the program would go until the year 1955 where the ratings fell. The following year, NBC News replaced the show with The Huntley-Brinkley Report.
In 1950, NBC News became the leader in television news coverage for American families, because of this, NBC News received ample financial resources and broadcast time. In 1956 NBC News brought together anchors Chet Huntley and David Brinkley, who along with reporters John Chancellor, Frank McGee, Edwin Newman, Sander Vanocur, Nancy Dickerson, Tom Pettit, and Ray Scherer, would set the standard for news programs on television, maintaining high ratings in the United States.
NBC News was noted for its reporting on civil rights movements. In 1955, NBC News provided coverage of the Montgomery bus boycott led by Martin Luther King, broadcasting reports nationwide. A year later, he would cover the admission of nine black students to Little Rock Central High School in Arkansas, where the lead reporter came from television rather than the usual print media.
On November 22, 1963, at 1:45 p.m. NBC News interrupted its regular programming to announce the assassination of United States President John F. Kennedy in Dallas, Texas. Journalists Chet Huntley, Bill Ryan, and Frank McGee were in charge of informing viewers of the events through reports. Approximately forty minutes later, NBC News canceled its programming for four consecutive days, airing seventy-one consecutive hours reporting on the president's assassination until his state funeral.
NBC News began to slide in the ratings in the late 1960s and its biggest crash was seen in the year 1970, which led to the renaming of NBC's main newscast to NBC Nightly News and has had several main anchors ever since.
NBC News was also prominent in coverage of manned space missions in the United States, such as: Project Mercury, the Gemini Program, and the Apollo Program, NBC News used model rockets and spacecraft, maps of the moon and the earth , scenarios and animated figures to illustrate the movements of the astronauts inside the ship as in their landing on the moon. NBC won an Emmy Award in 1969 for its coverage of the first moon landing in 1969.
In 1989, NBC News had the only television news correspondent in the United States to witness the fall of the Berlin Wall.
In 1982, NBC News began production of NBC News Overnight, the show was canceled in 1983, in 1991, NBC News aired another nightly newscast called NBC Nightside, which would run until 1998 and was replaced by The Tonight Show and then Poker After Dark from 2007 to 2011. NBC currently airs Late Night with Jimmy Fallon.
